Hamsun grew up in Northern Norway, and lived and worked in the United states from 1882-1884. He visited Madison and went to seek work with a brother who lived in Elroy, Wisconsin. Hamsun's debut as a novellist was with Hunger (1890), and it is a landmark of Modernist narrative technique, remarkable for its depiction of the consciousness of a starving man. Hamusn won the Nobel Prize in 1920. He has been widely translated. Especially recommended are Mysteries (1892) and Pan (1894).
