Jersild is a prolific writer, who became a medical doctor before he became an author. Some of his writing has been described as "Kafkaesque," and some of his work might be described as science fiction. Jersild uses his scientific expertise to question the ethics of modern consumer-driven society. Several of his novels have been translated to English, such as: Children's Island (1986), The House of Babel (1987), The Animal Doctor (1975), and After the Flood (1986).
