The Tales of Hans Christian Andersen. (Allen, Mellor,
Schmidt)
(3-4 credits)
A large number of Andersen's most significant tales are
examined in the context of Danish society of the 19th century
and of Andersen's life, covering his amazing rise from
abject poverty to world-renown as a writer. This examination
is designed to dispel the popular image of Andersen as
a sentimental and amiable spinner of tales for children
and to demonstrate that this splendid and complex humorist
intended his tales to convey social, moral, and philosophical
messages to a mature audience.
