Scandinavian Studies 409.
Medieval Studies 409.
Survey of Old Norse-Icelandic Literature.
(Wolf)
(3 credits)

The course gives students an overview of Old Norse-Icelandic litrature from the 12th century until the Reformation (1550). It is a continuation of Old Norse 407 or 408 and is a combination of lecture and seminar. In the lectures, a survey of the development of Old Norse-Icelandic literature is given with emphasis on the major literary genres: eddic and skaldic poetry, religious literature (homilies and saints' lives), early historical writings, contemporary sagas (bishops' sagas and Sturlunga saga), sagas of Icelanders, kings' sagas, romances, mythical-heroic sagas, and rímur. Representative texts of each genre are read and analyzed in class.
