Scandinavian Studies 425.
Knut Hamsun and the 20th-Century Norwegian Novel. (Thresher)
(3-4 credits)
This course examines the modern literary period in Norwegian
prose writing and its evolution into postmodernity. We
look at the stylistic innovation and the recurring thematic
intersts of authors such as Cora Sandel, Tarjei Vesaas, Øystein
Lønn, Lars Saabye Christensen, and Kjartan Fløgstad,
and discuss their works in the context of Norwegian and
European cultural history. The course begins with a close
examination of Knut Hamsun's 1890s novels, Hunger, Mysteries,
and Pan.
