Scandinavian Studies 434.
The Art of Isak Dinesen/Karen Blixen.
 (Brantly)
(4 credits)

Karen Blixen, known under the pen name of Isak Dinesen, is a Danish author who wrote her texts in English. She is perhaps best known for her memoire, Out of Africa, written about the 19 years she lived on a coffee farm in British East Africa. The majority of her work consists of tales written in the spirit of The Decameron and Arabian Nights. "True art is always part magic," she once claimed. This course examines Blixen's literary inspirations, considers her unique status in world literature (romantic? modernist? postmodernist?), and helps students to solve some of her intricate literary puzzles.
