Scandinavian Studies 476.
Scandinavian Life and Civilization for Majors.
 (Schmidt
(4 credits)

This course, open to freshmen, takes an introductory look at Scandinavia. Through a diverse series of guest lectures, films, and some discussions, we explore the arts, culture, geography, history, languages, literature, music, and politics of the Scandinavian countries. The goal is to provide a broad introduction to Scandinavia as a region playing an important role in the past history and contemporary culture of the world. Typically, all the professors from the Scandinavian Department lecture, and several graduate students also present their expertise on a variety of topics. Supplementing the requirements for 276, Scandinavian Life and Civilization, this class demands additional hours spent on in-depth reading and analysis of chosen texts relevant to the syllabus. Furthermore, the class includes writing a formal, argumentative 8-10 page research paper about a topic chosen by the students.
