Scandinavian Studies 633-636.
Survey of Scandinavian Literature:
1300-1500, 1500-1800, 1800-1890, 1890-1920
.  (Brantly
(3 credits)

The course consists of a three-semester sequence--two of which are required for graduate students majoring in literature--covering all periods of Scandinavian literature. Particular attention is given to authors not examined in other courses, and from each author's production a few major texts are selected for thorough analysis. The texts are discussed in their sociocultural context; thus the course provides an overview of both literary and intellectual history. In addition some emphasis is given to recent critical theory (in and outside Scandinavian), and the student is asked to apply various critical approaches to the texts in order to receive training in methodology. All texts are read in the original languages (Danish, Norwegian, Swedish). The format of the course is that of a workshop, i.e., the students are asked to participate actively, both individually and through groups, and each student is asked to submit a number of short papers that are subject to critique of both instructor and fellow students.
