Beginning Swedish is taught with a communicative approach
that trains students in the skills of speaking, reading,
writing, and listening. Our first semester Swedish course
currently uses Nya maal 1 as its textbook. in the first
semester, students will learn some central vocabulary and
gain a basic knowledge of Swedish grammar.

During the second semester, students will continue to expand
their skills in speaking, reading, writing, and listening.
The textbook is Nya maal 2. At the end of one year, students
should be able to make themselves understood while traveling
and decipher authentic language texts with the aid of a
dictionary.

In third semester Swedish, students continue to improve
their conversational and writing skills by adding to their
vocabulary and reviewing grammar as it arises. Students
are introduced to authentic language texts, such as Tove
Jansson's Det osynliga barnet or Astrid Lindgren's Broderne
Lejonhjarta.

Fourth semester Swedish offers additional opportunities
to improve communication skills. Students continue to read
simple, but authentic, language texts and are given increased
exposure to Swedish as it is spoken by native Swedes through
film and internet broadcasts.
Scandinavian Studies 262
Readings in Swedish Literature (Brantly/Mellor)
(3-4 credits)
By the end of the fifth semester of Swedish, students should
be able to read and discuss literary texts in Swedish,
including those from the late 19th century. The course
has both a language and a content component. Students begin
by reading short texts by 20th-century writers and then
read Onda sagor by Par Lagerkvist, Historietter by Hjalmar
Soderberg, and some short stories by August Strindberg.
These texts are accompanied by online exercises which help
students learn new vocabulary and review grammar.
