Church at Finström

St Mikael's Church at Finström, Åland,
Finland

The oldest part have been dated from the 12th century. The chancel and granite vaults were added in the 13th and 14th centuries, and the five-spire Gothic tower was built in the 15th century

The frescos are from the 15th century. The are well preserved and have been restored in recent years.

There are several wooden sculptures from the medieval period throughout the church. One from 1250 depicts St. Michael, the patron Saint of the church, and is found at the back of the church.

The reredos date from the 1460s. Its main group consists of a Pieta, the dead Saviour in the arms of Mary, with Joseph of Arimatheae and Nicodemus. Also found are St. Micheal, St Barbara, St. Henry, and St George.

The crucifix is from the early part of the 14th century. A votive ship was donated in 1688 by the Navy reservists from the northern part of the parish. The pulpit is from 1703 and the Organ was built by Hans Heinrich in 1974. The old organ from 1768 now stands on the porch.
