Professor Niels Ingwersen of the Scandinavian Department has taught
well over 15,000 students during his 38 years at U.W. Madison.
When he retired at the end of the fall semester 2003, it was truly
be the end of an era. Over the years, students have flocked to
Ingwersen’s classes in order to enjoy his easy-going lecture
style and flair for storytelling. In 1988, the department neglected
to place an enrollment limit on Ingwersen’s popular Hans
Christian Andersen course. 873 students signed up, forming what
is probably the largest class on a Scandinavian topic in history.
Some professors might have one large class they routinely teach,
but Ingwersen has three. In addition to Andersen, his Masterpieces
of Scandinavian Literature course and Introduction to Folklore
class generally attract hundreds of students whenever they are
offered. During his career Ingwersen has won several awards for
his excellence in teaching, including the William Kiekhofer Teaching
Award. In 1997, he was made a Knight of Dannebrog by the Danish
Queen, in recognition of his achievements on behalf of Danish culture.
The Scandinavian Department has established a Faith
and Niels Ingwersen Fund in honor of Niels and his
wife, Faith, who has been his scholarly collaborator throughout
his career. The fund will
enable our department to maintain the high standard of teaching
excellence that Professor Ingwersen has set.
