Why Major in Scandinavian
Studies?
Hi and Welcome!
Here are some very good reasons for majoring in Scandinavian
Studies in no particular order:
Students naturally get better grades in courses that they
are interested in.
A Scandinavian Studies major indicates that you have mastered
a foreign language - an asset in a global economy. Many businesses
value language skills in their employees.
As a major in the humanities you will have improved your
writing skills - an important skill in whatever context you
may find yourself in later in life.
As a major in the humanities you will have learned to think
critically about complex issues.
Your Scandinavian Studies background will make you distinctive.
Your application will stand out against a field of more common
backgrounds.
Scandinavian literature spans centuries and is of a very
high quality.
The politics of Scandinavia during this century have
constituted an important "third alternative" to the two
sides of the Cold War.
You can do virtually anything with a Scandinavian Major
that you could do with any other major in the humanities, such
as English or History.
What have other Scandinavian majors ended up doing?
Going to Graduate School in Scandinavian Studies
Going to Law School
Going to Medical School. (This requires fulfilling the pre-med
prerequisites along with the Scandinavian major)
Going to the School of Information and Library Sciences
Working as a journalist for an English-language journal
in Stockholm
