This course is devoted to close readings of Hans Christian Andersen's fairy tales, some of which you might already know and others you've never heard of.

Andersen is a wonderful storyteller, but his fairy tales are not much like the Disney versions of them that you might be familiar with. He writes for adults as much as for children, and his tales are full of magic but also suffering, joy as well as sorrow. His best stories do more than just entertain us; they force us to examine our own lives and beliefs and feelings.

Hans Christian Andersen loved to tell stories to children, but he hated to be known as only a children's author. His stories explore the human soul and deal with its complexity. Don't expect simplicity--expect the opposite!
