19th Century Scandinavian Literature
The Nineteenth Century saw a golden age of Scandinavian literature that
produced such famous writers as Søren Kierkegaard, Hans Christian
Andersen, Henrik Ibsen, August Strindberg, and Knut Hamsun. Each of these
writers had a significant impact on literature beyond the borders of Scandinavia,
as did many of their Scandinavian colleagues who are no longer remembered
abroad. This course will provide a survey of the major literary movements
and figures from Denmark, Norway, and Sweden during this important century.
