How to Take This Course

Students are expected to read the assigned texts, listen to lecture, take online quizzes, post regularly to the bulletin board, and complete one or more essay exams.  The syllabus contains the course schedule, including deadlines for quizzes and exams.

Although online courses allow for a certain flexibility, the quiz and exam deadlines are absolute.  To succeed in the course, it is recommended that students work steadily and do not leave the readings and lectures until just before immenent deadlines.

Credits

Lit Trans 337:
All students should be taking the course for 3 credits.  A fourth credit requires a paper.  The fourth credit option is not available during the summer.

Scan 424:
This version of the course requires a knowledge of the Scandinavian languages.  During the semester, all students should take the course for 4 credits, and are required to write a paper.  During the semester, all students should take the course for 3 credits.  The fourth credit option is not available during the summer.  Students should contact the instructor about locating course materials in the Scandinavian languages.

Quizzes

The online quizzes are geared to the content of the lectures.  It is rather like taking attendance in a conventional class.  You must take all the quizzes in order to pass the course.  You are expected to get more right than you get wrong.

Bulletin Board

Students earn participation points by posting regularly to the course bulletin board.  During the semester, students are expected to post a minimum of 4 points per week.  During the summer, students are expected to post a minimum of 10 points per week.  Points are calculated as follows:

1 point: Student makes a statement or asks a question.
2 points: Student responds to a statement made by another student.
3 points: Student integrates statements by two other students in their response.

High-quality, active participation in discussions can raise your grade one letter (AB becomes A).  Minimal participation means that the grade you receive on the final exam is the grade you get.  No participation means that your grade is lowered one letter (A becomes AB).

Optional Chat & Discussion Section

Occasionally students may opt to earn participation points by taking part in live chat sessions (during the summer) or attending an in-class discussion section (during the semester).  See syllabus or timetable for availability, time, and location, if appropriate.

Exams

The exams in this course are essay exams, which are open book and open note.  The exams are emailed to students and returned within 48 hours.  See the syllabus for the exam schedule.  If you are curious, let me tell you how I grade essay exams.
