Lesson 6Lesson 1
Amalie Skram and Victoria Benedictsson

Introduction

This lesson looks at criticisms of bourgeois marriage offered by two women writers: Amalie Skram and Victoria Benedictsson. Skram's "Prayer and Doubt" shows a woman caught in an impossible marriage who cannot free herself because of the stigma of divorce.   Benedictsson's "Happiness" shows the harmful consequences of keeping young women ignorant of the sexual duties expected of them in marriage.
