Lesson 15Lesson 15
Hjalmar Söderberg

Introduction

Hjalmar Söderberg is a decadent writer who engages in some stylistic experiments in these four short stories. "A Masterless Dog" is at once an engaging tale of a stray dog and an allegory of the human condition. "The Sketch in India Ink" meditates over the possibility of finding meaning in art and life. "The Dream of Eternity" uses surreal techniques to question the desirability of an immortal soul. "The Chimney-Sweep's Wife" is a chilling tale in which evil is rewarded and good perishes.
