Lesson 18Lesson 18
Henrik Ibsen and When We Dead Awaken

Introduction

This lesson begins by looking at the currents of inspiration that ran from Ibsen to Strindberg and back again. Like many of the writers of the Modern Breakthrough, Ibsen moved away from provocative social realism to dramas that focus on existential issues. When We Dead Awaken is Ibsen's last play and examines the relationship between art and life and the sacrifices that art can demand of life.
