Sten Steensen Blicher

Introduction

This lesson introduces the Danish author, Sten Steensen Blicher. In many ways, Blicher is not a conventional Romantic. His story, "Tardy Awakening," tells a dark tale of adultery, while at the same time, making us question the reliability of the narrator and his judgements. The Romantic narrator of "The Hosier" finds his expectations for a happily-ever-after ending for two young lovers tragically undermined.  "The Pastor in Vejlbye" raises serious questions about the existence of divine justice.
