Lesson 8Lesson 8
The Nordic War over Sexual Morality: Arne Garborg and Anne Charlotte Leffler.

Introduction

One of the most highly charged social debates during the Modern Breakthrough was over sexual morality. Arne Garborg enters the debate in a light-hearted fashion with "Youth," a story about Anne Malena who does not seem hampered by the same sexual inhibitions that provoke guilt and blame in others. Anne Charlotte Leffler's "Aurore Bunge" tells the story of a woman who gives in to her natural sexual impulses, but must pay a high price to maintain her social standing.
