Elias Bredsdorff was born in Roskilde on January
15, 1912. He was a student at Roskilde where he graduated
in 1930. He when to University College, London, in 1934,
where he received his cand. mag. (roughly equivalent
to a Masters) in 1938. In 1939 he was teacher at Vordingborg
seminary. During the war, 1945-1946, Bredsdorff was an
active member of the Danish resistance against the nazis
and co-editor of the Frit Danmark [Free Denmark]. He
was Lecturer in Danish from 1949 to 1960 at the University
of Cambridge, where he became a Fellow of Peterhouse
from 1963 to 1979. In 1964 he received his dr. phil (roughly
equivalent to PhD) from Copenhagen's University.
Bredsdorff became interested in Andersen scholastically
during the 1950's, at which time he wrote several works
including H C Andersen og Charles Dickens [H C
Andersen and Charles Dickens], H C Andersen og England [H
C Andersen and England], and Hans Christian Andersen:
The Story of his Life and Work 1805-75.
Elias Bredsdorff is currently living an active life
in Denmark and is preparing to write a book on Oscar
Wilde.
