Lesson 1Lesson 1
Introduction: Emperors and Ugly Ducklings

Introduction

The first Segment is an introduction to the course.  Professor Ingwersen tells the tale of "The Emperor's New Clothes" in a lecture hall, but this course offers an experimental, new way to teach, the classroom-less classroom.  Andersen got his inspiration for some of his tales from folklore, but when he retold them, he changed them and his innovations are important.  Andersen's genius is how he used and changed the folktale on which, for example, "The Emperor's New Clothes" was based.  The tale "The Ugly Duckling" has often been seen as reflecting Andersen's own life, though it is not solely about his life.  Professor Ingwersen discusses the relationship between Mathias Winther and folklore and HC Andersen.
