Introduction

In 1872, the last year that he wrote, Andersen was at the end of his life. Issues of death concerned him.  These texts are some of his most pessimistic as Andersen looked back on his life.  Andersen was getting old and dying of cancer. The Melkior family was taking care of him. Mrs. Melkior wrote his final diary entries.
