Lesson 4Lesson 4
The Young Traveler Returns to Write

Introduction

The word digter is Danish and means poet or artist. Andersen arrives back in Copenhagen after a miserable time in Slagelse where he was taught at the hand of Simon Meisling.  Andersen learned the language of the Bourgeois Society of which he became a part, but into which he was never completely accepted.  Andersen left Slagelse and began to write. Andersen writes a book called Fodreise [Journey on Foot] in which he uses his education by using a lot of classical references. However, the book is also humorous and whimsical.  In 1831 he went on a tour of Europe. During that trip he established a pattern that he was to follow for years; he looked up famous authors like Ludwig Tieck and Albert Chamisso.  In the year 1835, Andersen wrote his first major novel, called The Improvisatore. It was translated into several languages and was a success. In the same year, he published his first group of tales, called Stories Told for Children. This volume included four stories: "The Tinderbox," "Little Claus and Big Claus," "The Princess on the Pea," and "Little Ida's Flowers." The reviews were mixed.
