Lesson 6Lesson 6
The Many Faces of Romanticism

Introduction

There are many aspects to Romanticism, including Biedermeier which is a sort of Bourgeois Romanticism. This concept can be seen in such texts as “The Angel.”  The tale, “The Snow Queen,” starts with the devils mirror, then continues with the tale of Gerde's quest for Kaj. There are two voices in the tale, that of Bildung and that of Biedermeier. This story starts as a tale of maturation, but in the end there is no maturing of the characters. They do not remember what happened to them.
