Introduction This lecture finishes the discussion about Andersen and women. It has been claimed that Andersen was a very early feminist because of his portrayal of women in his tales. Read Lise Sørensen's article about Andersen and his relationship to women called "A Bachelor Goes a-Wooing". In "The Swineherd" (from Lesson 7), Andersen exaggerates the ending to make a point. Andersen went to Italy for the second time. His departure was marred by an argument that was ensuing between himself and the Heibergs. He had asked the actress Johanne Luise Heiberg to perform in a new play he had written and she had refused. LectureReadingS From the web
