May Day Dinner and Film Event! Friday Night, 7:00 pm-12:45, Orpheum Theatre, 216 State Street On Friday May 1, SASS participants are cordially invited to an evening of eating, live music, and film at the Orpheum Theatre, a historic downtown hang-out on Madison's famous pedestrian thoroughfare, State Street. Join us for dinner and/or drinks, and attend one of the two FREE screenings of Nils Gaup's powerful film The Kautokeino-opprøret. Director Nils Gaup will introduce the film at its 7:00 pm showing and answer questions afterward. As a SASS participant, you will receive a discount on the Orpheum's fabled fish fry as well, so plan on making this your dinner and socializing choice for the evening! The Film The Kautokeino Rebellion is one of the year's most acclaimed Norwegian films. For centuries Sámi communities peacefully tended their reindeer herds in the far north of Norway. But by the mid-1800s, modern times have come with a vengeance in the person of a tyrannical local merchant and liquor salesman (Mikael Persbrandt). Elen (Anni-Kristiina Juuso) seeks to save her family and livelihood in a society where law and religious authorities seem bent on destroying the fabric of life. Her struggles culminate in one of the most dramatic events in North Norwegian history. Showings at 7:00, and 9:30. Nils Gaup will be on hand to introduce the film and answer questions at the 7:00 showing. The Fish Wisconsin is famous for its Friday fish fries. And the Orpheum's is one of the finest. As a SASS participant, you will receive a discount coupon so that the meal will cost only $12—a real value, and it's all you can eat! The restaurant area at the Orpheum seats 70 at a time, so plan to be flexible about eating before, during or after the first or second showing of the film. The Friends Madison is a place where people like to spend time with each other. The Orpheum has a full bar and lots of space for visiting and socializing. We will be providing a line-up of live local music to add to the atmosphere and give you a taste of Madison's diverse music scene. Come spend time with the locals at one of Madison's most popular theatres! Photo credits: Elen (Anni-Kristiina Juuso), Merchant Ruth (Mikael Persbrandt), and Rev. Stockfleth (Bjørn Sundquist).
