Grant for Danish Literature

In August 2009, the Scandinavian Studies Department was awarded a generous grant from the Seattle-based scan|design foundation, established by INGER & JENS BRUUN, to support the teaching of Danish-related courses. Mary DeLorme, Grants and Operations Manager for the scan|design foundation, sent us final confirmation that the scan|design foundation board had voted to authorize a grant of $22,428 to fund two semesters of Danish Literature courses during the 2009-2011 academic years. The grant will be spent for the teaching of two classes of the new literature course, Criminal Utopias, taught by Senior Lecturer, Nete Schmidt, in the spring of 2010 and 2011.

The grant, which is in large part the result of Department Chair Kirsten Wolf’s fundraising efforts, is a wonderful boon to the department during these times of financial hardship, and the wording of the grant letter leaves hope of potential additional grants in the future. The Department of Scandinavian Studies wishes to extend its warmest thanks to the scan|design foundation for this generous support, which will enable us to significantly enhance our course offerings to the students at the University of Wisconsin, opening their minds to different cultures and teaching them about Scandinavian societies and values.
